Heat Treatment Processes

Heat treatment is critical to optimizing their mechanical properties, tailored to each grade:

 

12CrMoV:

Normalizing: Heat to 900-950°C, hold, then air-cool to refine grains.

Tempering: Heat to 650-750°C for 2-4 hours to reduce brittleness and improve toughness, suitable for high-temperature service.

40CrMo4/42CrMo4:

Quenching: Heat to 820-860°C (austenitizing), then water or oil quenching to achieve martensitic structure, maximizing hardness.

Tempering: Heat to 500-650°C (depending on desired hardness) to relieve stress and balance strength/toughness. For example, tempering at 550°C achieves ~30 HRC with excellent toughness.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Machining Characteristics

Due to their high strength and alloy content, machining requires careful parameter control:

 

Cutting: Use high-speed steel (HSS) or cemented carbide tools. For 40CrMo4/42CrMo4, reduce cutting speed by 10-20% compared to carbon steel to avoid tool wear. Coolants (e.g., emulsion) are essential to prevent overheating.

Drilling: Pre-drill small pilot holes to reduce torque; use coated drills (TiN or TiAlN) for better wear resistance.
