12CrMoV, 40CrMo4, and 42CrMo4 Alloy Steel Plates
12CrMoV (Chinese standard), 40CrMo4 (European standard), and 42CrMo4 (European standard) are all high-strength alloy structural steel plates widely used in machinery manufacturing, engineering equipment, and high-stress components. They share similar core characteristics-excellent toughness, high tensile strength, and good hardenability-while differing slightly in chemical composition and application scenarios.
Heat Treatment Processes
Heat treatment is critical to optimizing their mechanical properties, tailored to each grade:
12CrMoV:
Normalizing: Heat to 900-950°C, hold, then air-cool to refine grains.
Tempering: Heat to 650-750°C for 2-4 hours to reduce brittleness and improve toughness, suitable for high-temperature service.
40CrMo4/42CrMo4:
Quenching: Heat to 820-860°C (austenitizing), then water or oil quenching to achieve martensitic structure, maximizing hardness.
Tempering: Heat to 500-650°C (depending on desired hardness) to relieve stress and balance strength/toughness. For example, tempering at 550°C achieves ~30 HRC with excellent toughness.



Machining Characteristics
