Standard and Designation2

These steel plates generally comply with the European standard EN 10025 - 6. In the designation, "S" represents structural steel, and the following numbers represent the minimum yield strength of the steel plate, in MPa. For example, the minimum yield strength of S460 is 460MPa, and that of S1100 is 1100MPa. In addition, different suffixes are used to represent different impact toughness levels. For example, "Q" indicates that the impact energy is specified at not lower than - 20℃, "QL" indicates not lower than - 50℃, and "QL1" (except for S960) indicates not lower than - 60℃.

Mechanical Properties2

S460: The yield strength is 460MPa (440MPa when the thickness is 50 - 100mm and 400MPa when the thickness is 100 - 150mm), the tensile strength is 550 - 720MPa, and the elongation after fracture is not less than 17%.

S500: The yield strength is 500MPa (480MPa when the thickness is 50 - 100mm and 440MPa when the thickness is 100 - 150mm), the tensile strength is 590 - 770MPa, and the elongation after fracture is not less than 17%.

S690: The yield strength is 690MPa (650MPa when the thickness is 50 - 100mm and 630MPa when the thickness is 100 - 150mm), the tensile strength is 770 - 940MPa, and the elongation after fracture is not less than 14%.

S960: The yield strength is not less than 960MPa, the tensile strength is 980 - 1150MPa, and the elongation after fracture is not less than 10%.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

S1100: There is relatively little public - available data, but its yield strength is as high as 1100MPa, and it is expected to have extremely high tensile strength and relatively low elongation after fracture.

Chemical Composition

The main chemical components of these steel plates include carbon (C), silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), and some alloying elements such as chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), and vanadium (V). Taking S690 as an example, its chemical composition is roughly as follows3: Si≤0.55% (some data indicate ≤0.80%), Mn≤1.60% (some data indicate ≤1.70%), P≤0.020% (some data indicate ≤0.025%), Cr≤1.00% (some data indicate ≤1.50%), Mo≤0.50% (some data indicate ≤0.70%), V≤0.12%.
