Products Description
Low Carbon Alloy 304L Steel (often referred to as 304L stainless steel) is a widely used austenitic stainless steel variant, distinguished by its low carbon content, which enhances its weldability and corrosion resistance-especially in post-weld applications. Below is a detailed overview of its key characteristics, properties, and applications:
1. Chemical Composition
The low carbon content is its defining feature, with typical ranges (per ASTM standards) as follows:
Carbon (C): ≤ 0.03% (significantly lower than 304 stainless steel, which has ≤ 0.08% C). This minimizes the risk of "sensitization" during welding (formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries, which depletes chromium near the boundaries and reduces corrosion resistance).
Chromium (Cr): 18.0–20.0% (provides primary corrosion resistance by forming a passive oxide layer on the surface).
Nickel (Ni): 8.0–12.0% (stabilizes the austenitic structure, improving ductility and toughness, especially at low temperatures).
Manganese (Mn): ≤ 2.0%.
Silicon (Si): ≤ 1.0%.
Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.045%.
Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.03%.
2. Key Properties
a. Corrosion Resistance
Excellent resistance to general corrosion in atmospheric environments, fresh water, and many organic/inorganic chemicals (e.g., mild acids, alkalis).
Superior to 304 in welded structures: The low carbon content prevents sensitization, ensuring the weld zone retains corrosion resistance-critical for applications like chemical processing tanks or pipelines.
Resists oxidation at moderate temperatures (up to ~870°C in intermittent service; ~925°C in continuous service).
b. Mechanical Properties
Tensile Strength: 485–655 MPa (depending on heat treatment and form).
Yield Strength: ≥ 170 MPa.
Elongation: ≥ 40% (high ductility, allowing easy forming, bending, and fabrication).
Hardness: ≤ 217 HB (Brinell) or ≤ 95 HRB (Rockwell B), indicating good machinability and workability.
