Role of Alloying Elements
St60-2 structural steel plates contain alloying elements such as chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni), which help improve the corrosion resistance of the steel. Chromium can form a dense oxide film on the surface of the steel, preventing corrosive media such as oxygen and moisture from contacting the steel matrix, thereby slowing down the corrosion rate. The addition of nickel can enhance the passivation ability of the steel, improving its corrosion resistance in different environments, especially for some oxidizing acids and salt solutions. In addition, an appropriate amount of silicon (Si) and manganese (Mn) can refine the grain, improve the strength and hardness of the steel, and indirectly have a positive impact on corrosion resistance. Manganese can also form manganese sulfide with sulfur, reducing the adverse effect of sulfur on the corrosion resistance of the steel.
Influence of Impurity Elements
Phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) are harmful impurity elements in steel that can reduce the corrosion resistance of the steel. Phosphorus can cause cold brittleness in steel, and sulfur can cause hot brittleness. Both will damage the microstructure of the steel and increase the sensitivity of the steel in corrosive environments. Therefore, St60-2 structural steel plates have strict restrictions on phosphorus and sulfur content, usually requiring phosphorus content ≤ 0.05% and sulfur content ≤ 0.05%.
