Effects of Excessive Welding Speed

Weld Appearance Quality

Non - compliant Weld Dimensions: Excessive welding speed will narrow the weld width. For example, in gas - shielded welding, the weld width may be between 8 - 10mm at a normal speed, but it may decrease to 6 - 7mm when the speed is too high. At the same time, the weld height will also be affected, and the situation where the middle of the weld is not filled may occur. This is because the amount of filler metal per unit time cannot keep up with the welding speed, resulting in a reduction of the effective bearing area of the weld.

Uneven Surface: During the rapid movement of the molten pool, the liquid metal does not have enough time to spread and solidify, and it is easy to form a wavy or serrated uneven appearance on the weld surface. This uneven surface not only affects the aesthetics but may also cause stress concentration during subsequent processing or use.

Undercut Phenomenon: Because the arc stays at the edge of the welded part for too short a time, after the base metal at the edge of the weld is melted, the liquid metal does not have time to fill it, and undercut will be formed. Undercut will reduce the effective thickness of the weld, and stress concentration is likely to occur at the undercut when the load is borne, reducing the fatigue strength and corrosion resistance of the weld.

Weld Appearance Quality

Excessively Wide Weld and Excessive Reinforcement: When the welding speed is too slow, the molten pool stays on the surface of the welded part for too long, and the weld width will increase. For example, in manual arc welding, the weld width is 6 - 8mm at a normal welding speed, but it may reach 10 - 12mm when the speed is too slow. At the same time, because the liquid metal accumulates for a long time, the weld reinforcement will be too high. The excessively high reinforcement will make the transition between the weld and the base metal unsmooth, and stress concentration is likely to occur at the reinforcement when the load is borne.

Rough Surface: The long - term stay of the molten pool will cause the liquid metal to flow unevenly under the influence of gravity, which may lead to a fish - scale - like rough appearance on the weld surface. For some welded parts with high surface quality requirements, such as decorative welded parts or thin - plate welded parts, this rough surface does not meet the requirements.

Weld Internal Quality

Deterioration of Heat - Affected Zone Performance: A too - slow welding speed will lead to excessive heat input, and the heat - affected zone will stay at a high temperature for a long time. During this process, the grains in the heat - affected zone will grow, reducing the toughness and plasticity of the material. For example, when welding high - strength alloy steel, the growth of grains in the heat - affected zone may lead to a decrease in its impact resistance and it is more likely to break when subjected to impact loads.

Alloying Element Burn - off and Segregation: For welded parts containing alloying elements, a too - slow welding speed will make the molten pool exist for a long time, and the alloying elements may be burned off due to a long - term high - temperature environment. At the same time, the phenomenon of uneven distribution of alloying elements in the weld, that is, segregation, may also occur, changing the chemical composition of the weld and affecting the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the weld.
