Fabrication and Welding

Weldability

Advantages:

Low carbon content (≤0.23%) and controlled alloying make it highly weldable without excessive preheating for most applications (unlike higher-strength grades like A572 Grade 65).

Compatible with common welding processes:

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) (e.g., E7018 electrodes).

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) (e.g., ER70S-6 wire).

Considerations for Thick Sections:

Preheating to 80–150°C may be required for plates >25 mm thick to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking.

Use low-hydrogen electrodes and maintain interpass temperatures <250°C.

Cutting and Forming

Cutting:

Oxy-fuel cutting for plates >6 mm; plasma or laser cutting for precision in thinner sheets.

Forming:

Cold forming is feasible for moderate bends in thinner plates; hot forming is recommended for thick sections or complex shapes to avoid work hardening.
