Post-Weld Treatment

1. Post-Weld Heating (Hydrogen Removal Treatment)

Purpose: Accelerate the diffusion and escape of hydrogen from the weld metal, reducing the risk of delayed cracking, especially for thick plates or structures with high restraint.

Process Parameters:

Heat the welded area to 200–250°C immediately after welding.

Hold the temperature for 1–2 hours, with an additional 0.5 hours of holding time for every 25 mm increase in plate thickness.

Cool slowly with the furnace to room temperature.

2. Stress-Relief Annealing (Optional)

Application Scenarios: Used for critical structures or thick plates (e.g., pressure vessels, components under dynamic loads) to eliminate welding residual stress.

Process Parameters:

Heat to 550–650°C (below the tempering temperature of the base metal to avoid softening).

Holding time is calculated based on plate thickness (1 hour per 25 mm thickness).

Cool with the furnace to ≤300°C, then air-cool to room temperature.

3. Post-Weld Inspection

Visual Inspection: Check for surface defects such as cracks, undercut, and porosity.

Undercut depth: ≤0.5 mm, with total length ≤10% of the weld length.

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT):

Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Detects internal defects (cracks, slag inclusions, lack of fusion), suitable for thick plates.

Radiographic Testing (RT): Detects volumetric defects (porosity, slag inclusions), suitable for thin plates (≤30 mm).

Mechanical Property Testing (When Necessary):

Tensile test, bend test, and low-temperature impact test (-20°C, impact energy ≥34 J).
