Chemical Composition
201 Stainless Steel (L1/Lh)
The 201 stainless steel grade contains mainly chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and manganese (Mn). The chromium content is typically around 16 - 18%. Chromium is the key element that provides corrosion resistance by forming a passive oxide film on the surface of the steel. The nickel content in 201 stainless steel is relatively low, usually around 3.5 - 5.5%. Manganese is added in a relatively high amount, around 5.5 - 7.5%. The higher manganese content helps to substitute for some of the more expensive nickel and also affects the mechanical and physical properties of the steel.
202 Stainless Steel (L4)
202 stainless steel also contains chromium, nickel, and manganese. It has a chromium content of about 17 - 19%. The nickel content is around 4 - 6%. Manganese content is around 7.5 - 10%. The higher manganese content in 202 stainless steel compared to some other grades can influence its strength and workability. It also contains other elements in smaller amounts such as carbon (C), silicon (Si), and phosphorus (P), which play roles in the steel - making process and can affect the final properties of the steel.
