Detection and Control of Manganese Element

 

Process Description: During the converter steelmaking process, the change in the content of manganese element has a significant impact on the properties of steel. Once the blowing process begins and oxygen is continuously blown in, manganese will undergo an oxidation reaction. The OES sensor is capable of monitoring the decreasing trend of the manganese element content in real time. For example, when blowing low-carbon steel, the initial manganese content might be around 1.2%. As the blowing proceeds, the manganese will gradually be oxidized.

 

Application Advantages: The detection frequency of the OES sensor, which is once every 30 - 60 seconds, enables the operators to accurately grasp the oxidation rate of the manganese element. When the manganese content drops to a certain level, such as approaching 0.3% - 0.5%, the operators can decide whether to add ferromanganese alloy to replenish the manganese element according to the requirements of the steel grade. In this way, the content of the manganese element in the finished steel can be effectively controlled and ensured to be within the specified range. For instance, for certain high-strength structural steels, the manganese content can be precisely controlled between 0.6% and 1.0%, thereby improving the strength and toughness of the steel.

 

Dynamic Monitoring of Phosphorus Element and Adjustment of Phosphorus Removal Operations

 

Process Description: Phosphorus is a harmful element in steel and needs to be removed as much as possible during converter steelmaking. During the blowing process, phosphorus will react with oxygen and alkaline oxides in the slag and then enter the slag. The OES sensor can detect the changes in the content of phosphorus element in the molten steel. In the early stage of blowing, the phosphorus content might be relatively high, and it should gradually decrease as the reaction progresses.

Application Advantages: If the OES sensor detects that the decreasing speed of the phosphorus element content is too slow, the operators can adjust the basicity of the slag (for example, by adding slag-making materials like lime) to promote the removal of phosphorus. Meanwhile, based on the detection data, the blowing intensity and time can also be adjusted to ensure that the phosphorus content is reduced to an appropriate level. For example, for high-quality carbon steel, the phosphorus content can be controlled below 0.03%, thus improving the quality of the steel and reducing problems such as cold brittleness.

 

Monitoring of Sulfur Element and Optimization of Desulfurization Measures

 

Process Description: Sulfur will form sulfide inclusions in steel, which affects the quality of steel. During converter steelmaking, part of the sulfur will enter the slag during the blowing process, but some sulfur will still remain in the molten steel. The OES sensor is able to monitor the residual situation of the sulfur element in the molten steel.
