Billet Preparation and Heating

 

Billet Selection: Firstly, it's essential to choose qualified casting billets as the rolling billets. The quality of the casting billets is of great importance for the subsequent rolling process and the performance of the final product. For high - strength shipbuilding steel plates, the casting billets should have good internal quality, with internal porosity, blowholes and other defects minimized. Because these defects may expand during the rolling process and affect the performance of the steel.

 

Purpose of Heating and Temperature Control: The billets need to be heated before entering the rolling mill. The main purposes of heating are to reduce the deformation resistance of the billets, making the rolling process smoother, and to make the billet structure more uniform. The heating temperature is generally around 1100 - 1250℃. Within this temperature range, the grains inside the billets will gradually grow and become more uniform. If the heating temperature is too low, the deformation resistance of the billets will be relatively high, which will increase the difficulty of rolling and may lead to non - uniform steel structure after rolling. If the temperature is too high, problems such as over - burning and decarburization on the billet surface may occur, affecting the quality of the steel. During the heating process, the heating rate needs to be strictly controlled to avoid excessive temperature differences between the surface and the interior of the billets due to over - rapid heating, which may generate thermal stress and cause defects such as cracks.
