There are significant structural and thermal stresses inside the shipbuilding steel plate after quenching. During the quenching process, the steel cools rapidly, so the internal structure doesn't have enough time to transform uniformly, thus generating stresses. During low - temperature tempering at 200°C, martensite begins to decompose, and this is a relatively slow structural transformation process. As martensite decomposes into tempered martensite, the internal structural and thermal stresses are gradually released. For example, it's like an over - compressed spring slowly recovering in a relatively mild environment. The internal stress state of the shipbuilding steel plate is improved, which enhances the toughness of the material.

 

This stress - release helps to reduce the possibility of cracks caused by internal stress concentration when the material is subjected to external forces.
