Chemical composition:

Carbon (C): The carbon content is relatively low, typically up to 0.18%. A lower carbon content helps to improve the weldability and toughness of the steel.

Silicon (Si): The silicon content is up to 0.50%, which contributes to the strength and heat resistance of the steel.

Manganese (Mn): Manganese is in the range of 0.90 - 1.60%, enhancing the strength and hardenability of the steel.

Phosphorus (P) and Sulfur (S): The phosphorus content is limited to 0.025% or less, and the sulfur content is also 0.025% or less. Low levels of these elements are important to ensure the ductility and weldability of the steel3.

Other Alloying Elements: It also contains certain amounts of alloying elements such as aluminum (Al ≥ 0.015%), chromium (Cr ≤ 0.20%), nickel (Ni ≤ 0.40%), molybdenum (Mo ≤ 0.08%), niobium (Nb 0.02 - 0.05%), vanadium (V 0.05 - 0.10%), and copper (Cu ≤ 0.35%). These alloying elements contribute to various properties such as strength, corrosion resistance, and toughness.

Mechanical properties:

Yield strength: The minimum yield strength of BV DH40 steel plate is 390 MPa, which means it can resist deformation under certain loads.

Tensile strength: The tensile strength is within the range of 510 - 650 MPa, indicating its high strength and ability to withstand tensile forces.

Elongation: The elongation is relatively good, usually 19% for a 200 mm gauge length and 22% for a 50 mm gauge length. This property allows the steel to have some degree of deformation before fracture, which is important for absorbing energy during dynamic loading situations.

Impact resistance: It is required to pass the low-temperature impact test at -20°C, showing good impact resistance at low temperatures, which is essential for the steel to be used in marine environments where the temperature can be relatively low.
