Metallographic Microscopy Method
Sample Preparation: Firstly, a sample of an appropriate size needs to be cut from the BV FH36 Steel Plate. The general size is around 10mm×10mm×10mm. Then, the sample is ground and polished. For grinding, sandpapers of different grits can be used. Start with coarse - grit sandpaper (such as 200 - mesh) and gradually change to fine - grit sandpaper (such as 1200 - mesh) to obtain a flat surface. Polishing is carried out using a polishing compound on a polishing machine to make the sample surface have a mirror - like finish.
Etching Treatment: In order to make the grain boundaries clearly visible, the polished sample needs to be etched. A commonly - used etchant is a nitric - acid - ethanol solution (the volume ratio of nitric acid to ethanol is generally about 1:3). The sample is immersed in the etchant, and the etching time varies depending on the material and the etchant, usually ranging from a few seconds to tens of seconds. After etching, the sample is rinsed with clean water and dried.
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Method
Sample Preparation: Sample preparation is relatively simple. The size of the cut sample can be a little smaller, approximately 5mm×5mm×5mm. The sample surface needs to be cleaned to remove oil and impurities. If it is necessary to observe the grain size of the fracture surface (for example, to study the fracture behavior of the material), the sample can be fractured through a tensile test or other methods, and then the fracture surface can be directly observed.
Observation and Analysis: The sample is placed in the sample chamber of the scanning electron microscope. The electron beam scans the sample surface and generates secondary electron signals, and these signals can form a high - resolution image on the display. The magnification range of SEM is very wide, ranging from dozens of times to hundreds of thousands of times. When observing the grain size, an appropriate magnification can be selected, such as 1000 - 5000x, to make the grains clearly visible. Meanwhile, the analysis software equipped with SEM can automatically measure and statistically analyze the grain size and can obtain more accurate data of the grain size distribution.

When the electron beam bombards the sample surface, back - scatter electron diffraction patterns will be generated. These diffraction patterns are collected through a detector and analyzed using professional software. The EBSD technique can not only measure the grain size but also determine the grain orientation, grain - boundary type and other information. When analyzing the grain size, the software can automatically identify the grain boundaries according to the characteristics of the diffraction patterns and calculate the grain size, shape factor and other parameters, providing abundant data for a comprehensive understanding of the material's microstructure.
