Effect of Impurity Elements

 

Sulfur (S) and Phosphorus (P): Sulfur and phosphorus are harmful impurity elements in shipbuilding steel plates. Sulfur will form sulfide inclusions in steel, reducing the toughness of the steel. Especially during the hot - working process, it will lead to hot - brittleness. Phosphorus will reduce the toughness of the steel, especially in low - temperature environments, increasing the cold - brittleness of the steel. Therefore, during the production process of shipbuilding steel plates, the contents of sulfur and phosphorus need to be strictly controlled to ensure the quality and performance of the steel. For example, high - quality shipbuilding steel plates require the contents of sulfur and phosphorus to be as low as possible.
