Nano-indentation Technique
Principle and Operation: Nano-indentation technique obtains the mechanical properties of materials by applying nano-scale loads on the material surface using an indenter with a specific geometric shape (such as a triangular pyramid or a sphere) and then measuring the indentation depth. For CCS F690 steel, the samples before and after vibration stress-relief treatment are placed on the worktable of the nano-indentation equipment. The displacement of the indenter and the loading force are precisely controlled, and the load-displacement curve during the indentation process is recorded.
Analysis of Nanomechanical Properties:
Hardness Measurement: The hardness of the material can be calculated from the load-displacement curve. For example, according to the Oliver-Pharr method, the hardness value is calculated by analyzing parameters such as the slope of the unloading curve. By comparing the changes in hardness before and after vibration stress-relief treatment, the influence of the treatment process on the hardness, which is one of the nanomechanical properties of the material, can be directly understood.
Elastic Modulus Evaluation: Nano-indentation can also evaluate the elastic modulus of the material by analyzing the elastic deformation part during the loading and unloading processes. The elastic modulus reflects the material's ability to resist elastic deformation. If the vibration stress-relief treatment changes the internal microstructure of the material, such as the dislocation density or the grain size, it will be reflected in the change of the elastic modulus, so as to analyze its influence on the nanomechanical properties.
Plastic Property Study: By observing the plastic deformation part in the load-displacement curve, for example, analyzing the residual depth of the indentation, the plastic properties of the material can be studied. The vibration stress-relief treatment may change the plastic deformation behavior of the material, such as making it more difficult for the material to undergo plastic deformation or changing its yield strength. These changes can all be analyzed by the nano-indentation technique.
Combination of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS)
Principle and Operation: SEM can provide high-resolution microscopic topography images of the material surface, while EDS can analyze the chemical composition of micro-areas on the material surface. For CCS F690 steel after vibration stress-relief treatment, SEM is first used to observe whether there are changes in the microstructure on the material surface, such as the appearance of cracks, dislocation outcrops, or changes in grain shape. Then, EDS is used to analyze the changes in the chemical composition of these areas, because changes in the chemical composition may affect the nanomechanical properties of the material.
