Mechanical Stirring Method

 

Bottom Stirring:

 

Principle and Equipment: Stirring is achieved by installing permeable bricks or stirring paddles at the bottom of the steelmaking furnace. The permeable bricks allow gases (such as argon) to enter the molten steel in the form of small bubbles from the bottom. The rising bubbles drive the movement of the molten steel, thus playing a stirring role. The stirring paddle is directly driven to rotate by a motor, pushing the molten steel to rotate like a propeller.

 

Advantages: Bottom stirring can make the molten steel form a relatively stable circular flow inside the furnace, and the stirring effect is relatively uniform. For example, in the process of large-scale converter steelmaking, argon is blown into the bottom through the permeable bricks, which can effectively improve the uniformity of the composition and temperature of the molten steel, and is very beneficial for the uniform progress of reactions such as decarburization. Moreover, this stirring method can be carried out without destroying the slag layer on the surface of the molten steel, which helps to maintain the stability of the reaction environment inside the furnace.

 

Disadvantages: The equipment structure is relatively complex. The permeable bricks are prone to clogging. If the permeable bricks malfunction, the maintenance cost is relatively high. For the stirring paddle, the blades are prone to damage when working in the high-temperature molten steel environment for a long time and need to be replaced regularly.

Above 4 grades has not lower than 235N/mm2 yield strength and 400-420N/mm2 tensile strength

 

Side Stirring:

 

Principle and Equipment: Stirring devices are installed on the side of the steelmaking furnace. Generally, the rotating stirring shaft drives the paddles to rotate in the molten steel. This stirring method can design paddles with different shapes and angles according to needs to achieve different stirring effects.

 

Advantages: It is more suitable for some special-shaped steelmaking furnaces or situations where it is necessary to strengthen the stirring in a certain local area of the molten steel. For example, in a refining furnace, side stirring can focus on stirring a certain layer or a certain area of the molten steel, which helps to precisely control the uniformity of the composition of the molten steel and plays an important role in operations such as adjusting the distribution of alloy elements in the molten steel.

 

Disadvantages: Side stirring may cause certain erosion to the furnace wall. Long-term use may affect the service life of the furnace wall. Moreover, its stirring range may not be as comprehensive as that of bottom stirring, and it is prone to the appearance of stirring dead corners.
