Ultrasonic Testing

 

Principle:
Ultrasonic testing is based on the propagation characteristics of ultrasonic waves in materials. When ultrasonic waves propagate in ship - plate steel, their propagation speed, attenuation and other characteristics are related to factors such as the elastic modulus, density and internal microstructure of the material. The yield strength also has an inherent connection with the elastic modulus and microstructure of the material. By measuring parameters such as the propagation speed (v) and attenuation coefficient (α) of ultrasonic waves in ship - plate steel and using pre - established material property databases and theoretical models, the yield strength of the material can be indirectly evaluated. For example, in some studies, it has been found that for ship - plate steel with specific compositions and microstructures, the ultrasonic wave propagation speed is positively correlated with the yield strength.

 

Detection Process and Application Range:
During detection, the ultrasonic probe is placed on the surface of the ship - plate steel. The propagation speed and attenuation coefficient and other data are obtained by transmitting and receiving ultrasonic signals. This method is non - destructive and is suitable for on - site detection of ship - plate steel already installed in the ship structure or for rapid screening of mass - produced ship - plate steel. Nano - indentation Testing

 

Principle:
Nano - indentation testing is a micro - mechanical property testing method. A nano - scale indenter is used to press a tiny indentation on the surface of the ship - plate steel. The mechanical property parameters such as hardness and elastic modulus of the material are obtained by measuring the load - displacement curve during the indentation process. At the nano - scale, the yielding behavior of the material is different from that at the macro - scale. However, the yield strength can be estimated by establishing the connection between micro - and macro - mechanical properties. For example, according to the Oliver - Pharr method, the contact hardness and elastic modulus of the material can be calculated from the load - displacement curve of the nano - indentation, and then the yield strength can be estimated in combination with theoretical models.

 

Advantages and Limitations:
Nano - indentation testing can provide mechanical property information of micro - regions and is very useful for studying the influence of the surface or microstructure of ship - plate steel on the yield strength. Its testing accuracy is relatively high and it can be tested in a very small area, which is helpful for analyzing the local inhomogeneity of materials. However, the testing equipment of this method is expensive, the operation is complex, and the testing results are greatly affected by factors such as surface roughness and material microstructure.
