The non-destructive testing technologies for shipbuilding steel plates mainly include the following:
Ultrasonic testing (UT):
Principle: Utilize the propagation characteristics of ultrasonic waves in steel plates. When ultrasonic waves encounter defects, phenomena such as reflection, refraction, and scattering will occur, causing changes in the received signals. By analyzing these signals, it is possible to determine whether there are defects inside the steel plate.
Advantages: Fast detection speed, high precision, harmless to humans, capable of detecting smaller internal defects. Applicable to steel plates of various thicknesses and is one of the most commonly used methods in shipbuilding steel plate detection.
Limitations: The detection results for steel plates with complex shapes or uneven surfaces may be inaccurate. Professional technicians are required for operation and analysis.
Magnetic particle testing (MT):
Principle: Applicable to ferromagnetic materials. When there are defects on the surface or near surface of the steel plate, under the action of a magnetic field, a leakage magnetic field will be generated at the defect location, and magnetic particles will be adsorbed to form magnetic marks, thus revealing the position and shape of the defect.
Advantages: Simple operation, low cost. High detection sensitivity for surface and near-surface defects. Can visually display defects.
Limitations: Only applicable to ferromagnetic materials and not suitable for non-ferromagnetic materials such as stainless steel. Limited detection depth and unable to detect deep internal defects.
Radiographic testing (RT):
Principle: Use X-rays or gamma rays to penetrate the steel plate. Due to the different degrees of absorption and attenuation of rays by defects and the steel plate, different images will be formed on the imaging plate or film. Based on this, the internal defects of the steel plate can be judged.
Advantages: Intuitive and accurate detection results. Capable of detecting various internal defects including pores, slag inclusions, cracks, etc. Applicable to steel plates of various materials.
Limitations: Rays have certain radiation hazards to humans. Strict protection measures are required. High detection cost and slow detection speed. Not suitable for on-site real-time detection.

Metal magnetic memory testing (MMT):
Principle: Under the action of working loads on ferromagnetic components, due to the magnetomechanical effect and magnetoelastic effect, the orientation of magnetic domains inside the material will change. The tangential and normal components of the magnetic field in the stress concentration area will change. By detecting the changes in the magnetic field, the stress concentration areas and potential defects of the steel plate can be judged.
Advantages: Capable of detecting the stress concentration locations of materials and discovering potential dangerous defects. Has important significance for the diagnosis of early damage.
Limitations: The accuracy of detection results is affected by multiple factors. Professional technicians are required for analysis and judgment. Currently, this technology is still in the process of continuous development and improvement.
