Methods of Determining Yield Strength

Experimental Method - Tensile Test

Test Preparation: Firstly, specimens that meet the standards need to be prepared. For metallic materials, the specimens are usually dumbbell - shaped, and their shapes and dimensions should comply with relevant standards (such as GB/T 228.1 - 2010 "Metallic materials - Tensile testing - Part 1: Method of test at room temperature"). Mount the specimen on the grips of a universal testing machine and ensure that the axis of the specimen coincides with the loading axis of the testing machine to ensure uniform loading.

Test Process: Start the testing machine and apply an axial tensile force to the specimen at a certain loading rate. During the loading process, use an extensometer to accurately measure the strain of the specimen. When an obvious yielding phenomenon appears in the stress - strain curve, record the corresponding stress value as the yield strength. For materials with an obvious yield plateau, the stress corresponding to the yield plateau is the yield strength; for materials without an obvious yield plateau, the specified non - proportional elongation stress (such as 0.2% non - proportional elongation stress) is usually used to determine the yield strength. For example, for some high - strength alloy steels, when the non - proportional elongation of the specimen reaches 0.2%, the corresponding stress is taken as the yield strength.

Calculation Method (Based on Theoretical Models and Known Parameters)

In some simple theoretical models, if the elastic modulus and yield strain of the material are known, the yield strength can be calculated through a formula. The yield strength is represented by σ_y, the elastic modulus by E, and the yield strain by ε_y. However, this method requires accurate values of the elastic modulus and yield strain, and these values usually need to be obtained through experiments or by referring to standard data. In practical engineering, due to the complexity of materials and the diversity of actual working conditions, a simple calculation method often cannot accurately determine the yield strength, and experimental determination is usually the main method.

Experimental Method - Tensile Test

Conduct test preparation first, prepare suitable specimens and mount them on the testing machine. During the test process, continuously increase the axial tensile force until the specimen breaks. The testing machine system will automatically record the maximum stress that the specimen bears before breaking, and this maximum stress value is the tensile strength. During the test process, pay attention to observing the necking phenomenon of the specimen. When the stress reaches the tensile strength, the specimen will show necking in a local area and then break at the necking part.

Calculation Method (Based on Theoretical Models and Known Parameters)

In some theoretical models, for simple material structures and stress conditions, an attempt can be made to estimate the tensile strength through the microscopic structural parameters of the material and theoretical strength formulas. For example, for an ideal crystalline material, the theoretical tensile strength can be calculated according to the microscopic parameters such as the inter - atomic binding force and using theoretical formulas. However, these theoretical calculations are often based on many ideal assumptions and are quite different from the actual tensile strength of the material. In practical applications, tensile tests are still mainly relied on to accurately measure the tensile strength. Because there are various defects in actual materials (such as dislocations, inclusions, etc.), these factors will significantly affect the actual tensile strength of the material, making it difficult for theoretical calculations to accurately reflect the actual situation.
