Chromium (Cr) Element

 

Chromium is a typical alloy element that forms a protective film on the steel surface. In chromium - containing steel, chromium reacts with oxygen to generate a dense chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) protective film on the steel surface. This film is very stable and can effectively isolate the steel from external corrosive media, such as seawater in the marine environment, moisture and oxygen in the atmosphere. For example, stainless steel contains a relatively high proportion of chromium, enabling it to maintain good corrosion resistance by virtue of this chromium oxide protective film in a humid environment or when in contact with weakly corrosive liquids.

 

When this chromium oxide protective film is slightly damaged, in an oxygen - rich environment, the chromium element can promote the self - repair of the protective film. Because the chromium in the steel can quickly react with oxygen to regenerate chromium oxide, fill the damaged part of the protective film, and thus continue to play a protective role and prevent corrosive substances from further eroding the interior of the steel.

 

Aluminum (Al) Element

 

Aluminum can also form a protective film in steel. When the steel is exposed to air or other oxidizing environments, aluminum reacts with oxygen to form an aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) protective film. Aluminum oxide has high hardness, a high melting point, and good chemical stability and is an excellent protective layer. In a high - temperature environment, the advantages of this protective film are more obvious. For example, in the structural components of some high - temperature industrial furnaces, the aluminum oxide protective film on the surface of aluminum - containing steel can effectively resist high - temperature oxidation and hot corrosion.

 

Similar to the protective film formed by chromium, the aluminum oxide protective film also has a certain self - repair ability. Silicon (Si) Element

 

The protective film formed by silicon on the steel surface is mainly generated by reacting with oxygen to form silicon dioxide (SiO₂). The silicon dioxide protective film is a glass - like substance with good chemical stability. In some specific corrosive environments, such as those containing acidic media or high - temperature oxidizing environments, the silicon dioxide protective film can effectively prevent corrosive substances from coming into contact with the steel. For example, in chemical equipment, the use of steel containing an appropriate amount of silicon can resist the erosion of acidic solutions because the silicon dioxide protective film can prevent acidic ions from penetrating and corroding the steel.

 

However, the protective film formed by silicon is relatively brittle. It may crack when subjected to mechanical stress or large temperature changes. But as long as there is enough oxygen in the environment, the silicon element can still regenerate silicon dioxide at the cracked part and restore the protective function of the protective film to some extent.
