Solid - Solution Strengthening Mechanism
Principle: Alloying elements dissolve in the iron matrix to form a solid - solution, which causes lattice distortion of iron atoms. This lattice distortion increases the resistance to dislocation movement. For example, when elements such as manganese (Mn) and silicon (Si) are added, they occupy certain positions in the iron lattice and generate an elastic strain field in the lattice. When dislocations move in this distorted lattice, they need to overcome a higher energy barrier, thereby increasing the yield strength of the steel.
Example: In low - alloy steel, the manganese content is generally around 1.0% - 1.6%. After manganese atoms are incorporated into the iron lattice, the movement of dislocations becomes difficult, and the yield strength of the steel can be significantly increased. Generally speaking, for every 1% increase in manganese content, the yield strength can be increased by about 30 - 50 MPa.
Precipitation Strengthening (Dispersion Strengthening) Mechanism
Principle: Certain alloying elements can form fine, uniformly - distributed precipitated phases (or dispersed phases) in the steel. These precipitated - phase particles will impede the movement of dislocations. When the dislocation line moves to the precipitated - phase particles, it needs to bypass or cut through these particles, which requires additional stress, thereby increasing the yield strength of the steel.

Fine - Grain Strengthening Mechanism (Related to Alloying Elements)
Principle: Some alloying elements can affect the grain - growth process of steel and play a role in grain refinement. According to the Hall - Petch formula, the yield strength of steel is inversely proportional to the square root of the grain size. Therefore, grain refinement can effectively increase the yield strength. These alloying elements can refine grains by changing the nucleation rate and the grain - growth rate.
Example: When the aluminum (Al) element is added, during the steel - making process, aluminum can combine with oxygen (O) in the steel to form aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) inclusions. These inclusions can serve as the nuclei of non - spontaneous nucleation, increasing the nucleation rate and thus refining the grains. In addition, the titanium (Ti) element has a similar effect. It can form carbides and nitrides with carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), inhibit austenite - grain growth, and further refine the grains to increase the yield strength of the steel.
