The size of the welding heat-affected zone of shipbuilding high-strength steel can have multiple impacts on the performance of the steel:
I. In terms of mechanical properties
Reduced strength:
The heat-affected zone undergoes rapid heating and cooling during the welding process, which may lead to grain growth and organizational changes in this area. This often results in a decrease in strength, especially yield strength and tensile strength. For example, the yield strength of the original high-strength steel may be reduced by several dozen megapascals in the heat-affected zone.
The reduction in strength will affect the ability of the hull structure to bear loads and may make the hull more prone to deformation or damage in some stress concentration areas.
Reduced toughness:
Brittleness may occur in the heat-affected zone, and toughness is significantly reduced. In low-temperature environments, this may increase the risk of brittle fracture of the hull. For example, for ships sailing in cold sea areas, if the toughness of the heat-affected zone is insufficient, when encountering large impacts or stresses, sudden fractures may occur, endangering ship safety.
The reduction in toughness will also affect the ship's impact resistance when encountering accidental collisions or harsh sea conditions.

III. In terms of fatigue performance
Shortened fatigue life:
