Cementite

Structure and Formation

Cementite is an interstitial compound with a complex crystal structure. Its chemical formula is . It is mainly formed during the solidification process of steel when the carbon content exceeds the solubility limit of ferrite. In steels with a relatively high carbon content (such as high - carbon steel), the content of cementite is relatively high.

Mechanical Properties

Strength and Hardness
Cementite has very high hardness and strength and is the hardest phase in steel. Its Vickers hardness (HV) can reach about 800 - 1000, and its tensile strength can reach about 300MPa. This enables the steels containing cementite to perform well in application scenarios requiring high hardness and wear resistance, such as cutting tools and molds.

Toughness and Ductility
The toughness and ductility of cementite are almost zero. Due to its structural characteristics, cementite is a brittle phase and is prone to fracture when subjected to a relatively small external force. This also leads to the need to control the content and distribution of cementite in some steel application scenarios where good toughness is required to avoid the material from being too brittle and hard.

ABS(American Bureau of Shipbuilding) represents the higher strength group of ABS steel plate grades AH36, DH36,and DH36. Like ABS steel plate grade A&B, these grades of plate are almost exclusively utilized in the shipbuilding industry for the construction of structure parts of ships, barges and marine equipment.

Physical Properties

Density
The density of cementite is approximately 7.69g/cm³. In the structure of steel, the density characteristics of cementite will affect the overall density distribution of the material.

Magnetism
Cementite is a ferromagnetic substance and will exhibit magnetism under the action of a magnetic field. This magnetism can be utilized in some special application scenarios (such as the preparation of magnetic materials).

Machinability

Cutting Performance
Due to the high hardness of cementite, it will cause relatively large wear to the cutting tool during cutting. Therefore, when machining steel containing more cementite, appropriate tool materials and cutting parameters need to be selected to ensure the machining quality and the service life of the tool.

Forging Performance
Cementite has poor forging performance. Because of its high brittleness, it is prone to cracks and other defects during forging. Therefore, when forging steel containing cementite, the forging process needs to be strictly controlled, such as controlling the forging temperature and forging ratio.
