Riveting Process Parameters

1. Rivet Selection

Material:

Prioritize low-alloy high-strength steel rivets with compositions similar to the base metal (e.g., A502 Grade 2).

For enhanced corrosion resistance, use stainless steel rivets (e.g., 304/316).

Diameter:

Choose based on plate thickness: typically 1.5–2 times the plate thickness. Common sizes: φ10–φ22 mm.

Length:

Rivet length = total plate thickness + 1.25–1.5 times the rivet diameter (ensures proper head formation after riveting).

2. Drilling Requirements

Hole Diameter:

0.5–1.0 mm larger than the rivet nominal diameter (e.g., φ12.5 mm hole for a φ12 mm rivet).

Hole Spacing and Edge Distance:

Hole spacing: ≥3 times the rivet diameter (avoids stress concentration).

Edge distance: ≥1.5 times the rivet diameter.

Drilling Process:

Use cemented carbide drills or cobalt high-speed steel drills.

Control speed (100–300 rpm) and feed rate (0.1–0.3 mm/r) to prevent heat-induced hardening of the hole walls.
