Key Considerations for Weathering Steel Use

Patina Formation Requirements:

Weathering steel (e.g., Corten) forms a protective rust layer (patina) only under dry-wet cyclic conditions (e.g., regular rainfall and evaporation).

Avoid submerged or continuously wet environments: Immersion in water or burial in moist soil prevents proper patina formation, leading to unchecked corrosion.

Marine and coastal areas: Proximity to saltwater (high chloride content) can delay or inhibit patina development. Special coatings or alternative materials may be required in these environments.

Environmental Limitations:

Industrial vs. coastal use: Perform best in industrial/rural atmospheres with moderate pollution (e.g., sulfur dioxide aids patina stability). Coastal zones within 5 km of the sea require additional corrosion protection.
