1. Metallurgical Condition

A588 GrA plates are usually supplied in the as-rolled state (AR) unless otherwise specified by the buyer.

 

As-Rolled (AR): The steel is hot-rolled to the desired thickness without additional heat treatment (e.g., annealing or quenching). This state provides natural strength and corrosion resistance from alloying elements (Cu, P, Cr, Ni).

Optional Heat Treatment: In some cases, buyers may request:

Normalized: Improved mechanical uniformity through controlled heating and air-cooling.

Thermomechanical Controlled Processing (TMCP): Enhances toughness and grain structure via controlled rolling and cooling during production.

2. Mechanical Property Compliance

Before shipment, plates must meet the ASTM A588 GrA specifications for:

 

Yield Strength: ≥290 MPa (42 ksi)

Tensile Strength: 448–586 MPa (65–85 ksi)

Elongation: ≥21% (for thickness ≤16 mm)

Impact Toughness: Charpy V-notch test at 21°C (70°F) (Note: GrA has less stringent low-temperature impact requirements compared to GrB/GrC).
