Q420C steel plate is a high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) structural steel under the GB/T 1591 standard, where the "C" grade indicates it meets impact toughness requirements at -20°C. Its cold working stability refers to its ability to maintain structural integrity, dimensional accuracy, and mechanical performance consistency during cold forming processes such as bending, stamping, rolling, and shearing. Here is a detailed analysis:

Key Factors Affecting Cold Working Stability

Mechanical Property Foundation

Strength and Plasticity Balance: Q420C has a specified minimum yield strength of 420 MPa and a tensile strength of 520-680 MPa. Its elongation is ≥17%, indicating moderate plastic reserves-higher than ultra-high-strength steels (e.g., Q690) but lower than ordinary carbon steels (e.g., Q235). This balance allows controlled deformation without sudden fracture.

Low Yield Ratio: The yield ratio (yield strength/tensile strength) is generally ≤0.85, providing sufficient "plastic buffer" during cold working. This reduces the risk of premature failure under excessive stress.

Microstructure Influence

Through microalloying (addition of Nb, V, Ti) and controlled rolling/cooling processes, Q420C forms a fine-grained ferrite-pearlite structure. Fine grains enhance both strength and toughness, improving uniform deformation capacity during cold working and reducing the likelihood of localized cracking.

Performance in Typical Cold Working Processes

Cold Bending Stability

For thin to medium thicknesses (≤20 mm), Q420C can withstand bending tests with a bending radius of 2-3 times the plate thickness (depending on standards) without cracking. The fine grain structure ensures uniform stress distribution in the bending zone, avoiding brittle fracture at the outer surface.

Note: For thick plates (>20 mm), excessive bending angles or small bending radii may cause microcracks due to increased stress concentration. Pre-heating (to 100-200°C) can be used to improve plasticity if needed.
