The chromium (Cr) content in stable 316Ti alloy steel plate, typically ranging from 16.0% to 18.0%, is one of the key factors determining its core properties. Its specific impacts are reflected in the following aspects:

1. Core Guarantee for Corrosion Resistance

Chromium is the "fundamental element" enabling stainless steel to resist corrosion. When the chromium content exceeds 12%, a dense chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) passive film forms on the steel surface, which blocks contact between oxygen, water, and corrosive media with the substrate, thereby preventing further corrosion of the material.

 

The 16%-18% chromium content in 316Ti ensures the integrity and stability of this passive film, making it resistant to rust in environments such as humid air, fresh water, and weak acids/bases.

Combined with the effect of molybdenum (2.0%-3.0%), this chromium content further enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in highly corrosive media such as chlorides, seawater, and salt spray (superior to low-chromium stainless steels).

2. Key Support for High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance

Chromium significantly improves the oxidation resistance of 316Ti in high-temperature environments:

 

At elevated temperatures of 600-800°C, chromium reacts with oxygen to form a more stable oxide film, preventing continuous oxidative burning and damage to the steel surface.

The 16%-18% chromium content allows it to maintain surface stability during long-term high-temperature service (e.g., in heat treatment furnaces or exhaust systems), avoiding embrittlement or failure due to oxidation.
