Maintenance of Austenitic Matrix Stability

316Ti is an austenitic stainless steel, and the stability of its austenitic structure depends on the synergistic effect of chromium and nickel:

 

Chromium is one of the austenite-forming elements. A content of 16%-18%, combined with nickel (10.0%-14.0%), stabilizes the austenitic matrix, preventing transformation into brittle martensite at low temperatures or precipitation of harmful phases (e.g., σ phase) at high temperatures.

This characteristic ensures 316Ti retains toughness and ductility over a wide temperature range (-196°C to 800°C), especially maintaining good impact toughness in low-temperature environments and resisting brittle fracture.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Auxiliary Role in Intergranular Corrosion Resistance

Although the intergranular corrosion resistance of 316Ti mainly relies on titanium (which preferentially binds to carbon to prevent chromium depletion), chromium content remains fundamental:

 

If the chromium content is too low, even with titanium stabilization, the chromium concentration near grain boundaries cannot be maintained at a sufficient level, potentially weakening intergranular corrosion resistance.

The 16%-18% chromium content reserves ample chromium in the grain boundary region. Combined with titanium stabilization, it ensures resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or high-temperature service (particularly in the sensitive temperature range of 425-815°C).
