AISI 1008 Steel (UNS G10080)

1008 steel is a type of low-carbon steel also known as CS Type B in the ASTM standard. Its chemical composition includes a maximum carbon content of 0.10%, manganese (Mn) ranging from 0.30-0.50%, sulfur (S) with a maximum of 0.050%, and phosphorus (P) with a maximum of 0.035%.

The tensile strength of 1008 steel is 305 MPa, the yield strength is 260 MPa, and the fracture elongation is 40%. Due to its low carbon content, 1008 steel has good machinability and cost-effectiveness, making it widely used in the manufacture of refrigerators, air conditioners, automotive parts, electronics, and other products.

1008 steel is usually supplied in a cold-rolled state, also known as cold-rolled steel sheets. Steel in this state usually has better flatness, surface smoothness, and mechanical properties.

The advantages of 1008 steel include good machinability, low cost, good surface quality, ease of surface treatment, plating, and quenching, and a certain degree of sealing performance. The disadvantages include its relatively low strength and hardness, as well as poor corrosion resistance.

The most common forms of 1008 steel include cold-rolled steel sheets, hot-rolled steel sheets, steel strips, steel pipes, steel rods, and steel wires.

Different countries may have different names for 1008 steel. In addition to CS Type B in the ASTM standard, JIS standard in Japan identifies it as SPCC, China uses the name 08 steel, and Germany refers to it as DC01, all representing the same material.

In general, 1008 steel is a commonly used low-carbon steel material with good machinability and cost-effectiveness. It is widely used, but may require surface treatment and quenching due to its relatively low strength, hardness, and poor corrosion resistance.
