Below are its key characteristics and typical applications:

Key Properties:

Grade: A572 Gr.65

Yield Strength: 65 ksi (450 MPa) min

Tensile Strength: 80 ksi (550 MPa) min

Elongation: 18% min (in 8" gauge length)

Chemistry: Contains small amounts of columbium (niobium), vanadium, and nitrogen for enhanced strength.

Typical Composition:

Carbon (C): ≤ 0.23%

Manganese (Mn): ≤ 1.35%

Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.04%

Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.05%

Silicon (Si): ≤ 0.40%                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         BV Grade E Shipbuilding Steel Plate

Advantages:

✔ Higher strength-to-weight ratio than carbon steel (e.g., A36)
✔ Good weldability with proper procedures
✔ Suitable for bolted and riveted construction
✔ Improved toughness and formability

Common Applications:

Bridges & Highway Construction (girders, beams)

Building Structures (frames, supports)

Heavy Equipment & Machinery (cranes, trucks)

Transmission Towers

Storage Tanks & Pressure Vessels

Comparisons:

A572 Gr.50 vs. Gr.65: Gr.65 offers higher yield strength (65 ksi vs. 50 ksi) for more demanding applications.

A588 vs. A572: A588 has better corrosion resistance (weathering steel), while A572 is more cost-effective for general structural use.

Fabrication Notes:

Welding: Use low-hydrogen electrodes (e.g., E7018) and preheat if thickness exceeds ¾".

Machining: Gr.65 is harder than mild steel, so carbide tools are recommended.

Standards & Availability:

Complies with ASTM A572

Available in thicknesses from 3/16" to 4" (or more, depending on the supplier)
