Manufacturing Processes

Hot Rolling

Most HSLA plates are hot-rolled, where steel is processed above its recrystallization temperature to improve grain flow and reduce residual stresses.

Controlled Rolling (CR) or Thermomechanical Controlled Processing (TMCP) further refine grains for enhanced strength-toughness balance.

Heat Treatment (Optional)

Quenching + Tempering (TMT): Used for high-strength grades like A514 to achieve a tempered martensitic microstructure, boosting yield strength to ≥690 MPa.

Applications

Construction: Bridges, buildings, cranes, and structural frames (e.g., S355J0, Q355B).

Transportation: Truck frames, railway cars, and shipbuilding (e.g., A572 Grade 50 for weight reduction).

Considerations for Use

Welding

Use low-hydrogen electrodes (e.g., E50xx for S355J0, E11018 for A514) and follow controlled cooling rates.

Fabrication

Cold forming is feasible for low-strength grades; high-strength grades may require preheating to prevent cracking.

Ensure compliance with thickness tolerances (e.g., ±0.7mm for 10mm plates per EN 10025-2).

Corrosion Protection

For non-weathering grades, apply protective coatings (e.g., zinc primer, paint) in corrosive environments.
