Welding Process Parameters

1. Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

Current Type: Direct current reverse polarity (DCRP) to reduce spatter and stabilize the arc.

Welding Current:

φ4.0 mm electrode: 160–190 A

φ5.0 mm electrode: 200–230 A

Arc Voltage: 22–26 V

Travel Speed: 3–5 mm/s (Avoid excessive speed to prevent incomplete fusion; avoid too slow speed to prevent coarse grain formation).

2. Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)

Shielding Gas:

Pure Ar (purity ≥99.99%) or Ar+20% CO₂ (improves molten pool fluidity, suitable for all-position welding).

Gas Flow Rate: 15–25 L/min (Increase flow rate appropriately for outdoor welding to prevent air intrusion).

Welding Current:

Short-circuit transfer (thin plates): 80–150 A

Spray transfer (medium-thick plates): 200–350 A

Arc Voltage: 20–32 V (Match with current to avoid excessive arc length and porosity).

Travel Speed: 4–8 mm/s; clean slag and spatter between layers/passes.

3. Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)

Current Type: Direct current reverse polarity or alternating current (Prefer DC for high currents to reduce magnetic blowout).

Welding Current:

φ4.0 mm wire: 450–550 A

φ5.0 mm wire: 550–650 A

Arc Voltage: 28–34 V (Excessive voltage may cause poor weld formation).

Travel Speed: 25–40 cm/min (Excessive speed may cause undercut; too slow speed leads to high heat input).
