Basic Information

Standard Source: Specified in Japanese Industrial Standard JIS G3106, covering hot-rolled high-strength structural steel plates for applications requiring high strength and good weldability, such as construction, bridges, and machinery manufacturing.

Naming Rule:

SM: Abbreviation for "Structural Steel for Medium Strength" (structural use, medium tensile strength grade).

490: Indicates the minimum tensile strength of 490 MPa for plates with thickness ≤ 16 mm.

Manufacturing Processes

Hot Rolling:

Produced via high-temperature rolling to achieve uniform microstructure and stable mechanical properties.

Suitable for large-thickness plates; cost-effective and efficient.

Normalizing (Optional):

Heating followed by air cooling to refine grain structure, improving toughness and processability for high-demand applications.

 

Welding and Machining Performance

Weldability:

Low carbon equivalent (CE ≤ 0.45%), enabling common welding methods (arc welding, gas shielded welding).

Preheating is generally unnecessary for thin plates, but thick plates may require preheating to prevent cracking.

Cutting and Forming:

Supports flame cutting, plasma cutting, and mechanical machining.

Avoid excessive heating to prevent degradation of mechanical properties.
