1. Overview

NM400 is a high-performance wear-resistant steel grade widely used in harsh working conditions involving severe abrasion, impact, and heavy loads. The "NM" abbreviation stands for "Nian Mo" (耐磨,wear-resistant in Chinese), and the "400" indicates its average hardness of 400 HBW (Brinell hardness) after quenching and tempering. It belongs to the martensitic steel family, offering a balance of high hardness, wear resistance, and moderate toughness.

3. Manufacturing Process

Heat Treatment:

Quenching: Heated to 850–950°C, then rapidly cooled (e.g., water or oil quenching) to form martensite.

Tempering: Followed by tempering at 180–250°C to relieve internal stress and adjust toughness without significant loss of hardness.

Rolling Process:

Produced via hot rolling to achieve uniform thickness (typically 3–100 mm) and dimensional accuracy.
