The standard EN 10025 (European Standard for hot-rolled structural steel) uses specific symbols and designations to classify steel grades based on their mechanical properties, chemical composition, and quality requirements. Below is a breakdown of the symbols and their meanings:

General Structure of Steel Grade Designations in EN 10025

A typical steel grade in EN 10025 follows this format:
S / E + [Yield Strength] + [Quality/Impact Resistance] + [Special Requirements]

1. Prefix Letters

S: Indicates structural steel (used for general structural applications).

E: Indicates engineering steel (used for mechanical components, e.g., shafts, gears).

2. Yield Strength (in MPa)

A numerical value representing the minimum yield strength (at 16 mm thickness) in megapascals (MPa).Examples:

S235: Yield strength ≥ 235 MPa.

S355: Yield strength ≥ 355 MPa.

3. Quality and Impact Resistance Symbols

These letters denote the impact test requirements (Charpy V-notch test) and quality levels:

JR (or J2G3 in older standards):

Impact tested at +20°C (minimum energy: 27 J, longitudinal sample).

J0:

Impact tested at 0°C (minimum energy: 27 J).

J2:

Impact tested at -20°C (minimum energy: 27 J).

K2:

Impact tested at -20°C with higher energy requirement (minimum 40 J).

N:

Indicates normalized or normalized rolled steel (improves mechanical properties).

M:

Indicates thermo-mechanically rolled steel (no need for post-rolling heat treatment).

ML:

Thermo-mechanically rolled steel with improved low-temperature properties.

4. Special Requirements (Optional)

W: Weather-resistant steel (e.g., S355W).

H: Hollow sections (e.g., S355H).

Z: Z-direction properties (resistance to lamellar tearing, e.g., S355Z25).

Example Grade Breakdown

S355J2:

S: Structural steel.

355: Minimum yield strength 355 MPa.

J2: Impact tested at -20°C (27 J).

S275JR:

S: Structural steel.

275: Minimum yield strength 275 MPa.

JR: Impact tested at +20°C (27 J).
