Impact on Molten Steel Composition

 

Reduction of Manganese Content: During the steel - making process, manganese element is prone to oxidation reaction with oxygen. For example, in the blowing stage of converter steel - making, as oxygen is blown in, manganese will be oxidized to manganese oxide (MnO). This will lead to a decrease in the manganese content of the molten steel. Without reasonable control measures, the manganese content in the molten steel might be lower than the target value, thus affecting the properties of the steel. For instance, when manufacturing certain alloy steels that require a specific manganese content to ensure strength and toughness, an excessive reduction of manganese content will result in the strength and toughness of the steel not meeting the requirements.

 

Composition Fluctuation: The speed of manganese oxidation reaction is affected by various factors, such as temperature, oxygen flow rate, and slag composition. These factors may change during the steel - making process, which will lead to a change in the speed of manganese oxidation reaction. This will cause fluctuations in the manganese content of the molten steel and make the composition of the molten steel unstable. Impact on Slag Performance

 

Slag Basicity Adjustment: The MnO generated by oxidation is a basic oxide and it will enter the slag. The presence of MnO can adjust the basicity of the slag. During the steel - making process, an appropriate slag basicity is very important for reactions such as dephosphorization and desulfurization. Impact on Steel - making Temperature

 

Heat Generation: The manganese oxidation reaction is an exothermic reaction. During the steel - making process, the heat generated by manganese oxidation can provide part of the energy for the steel - making process.
