Effect of Temperature: The steel - making temperature has a significant impact on the formation and distribution of cementite. In the austenitizing temperature range (generally 727°C - 1394°C for high - carbon steel), the solubility of carbon in iron increases, which is beneficial for the uniform diffusion of carbon atoms. Appropriately increasing the temperature within this range, for example, between 1000°C and 1200°C, can enable carbon to dissolve more fully in austenite, creating conditions for the uniform precipitation of cementite. However, if the temperature is too high, it may lead to coarse austenite grains and affect the properties of the steel.

 

Time Control: Controlling the holding time of steel at high temperatures is also crucial. Sufficient time can ensure the diffusion of carbon and the precipitation of cementite, but an overly long time may cause problems such as grain growth. For example, during heat - treatment processes such as quenching and tempering, for high - carbon steel, the quenching holding time is generally determined according to the size of the workpiece and the furnace loading, usually between 30 minutes and 2 hours, to ensure that the cementite can be fully formed and evenly distributed.

Control of the Content and Distribution of Impurity Elements

 

Effect of Impurity Elements: Some impurity elements such as phosphorus and sulfur have an adverse impact on the cementite strengthening mechanism. Phosphorus will segregate at the grain boundaries, reducing the grain - boundary strength, and sulfur will form sulfide inclusions, destroying the continuity of the steel. During the steel - making process, the content of these impurity elements should be reduced as much as possible. For example, by optimizing the slag - making process of steel - making and using alkaline slag to adsorb impurity elements such as sulfur and phosphorus, these elements can be removed from the molten steel into the slag.

 

Homogenization Treatment: For impurity elements that unavoidably exist, their distribution should be made as uniform as possible.
