Deck Plates: These are the most fundamental components of the container ship's deck. The deck plates are usually made of high-strength hot-rolled steel, and their thickness varies depending on factors such as the size and load-bearing capacity of the ship. For example, the deck plates of a large container ship may be around 10 - 20mm thick to bear the weight of a large number of containers. These deck plates are welded together to form a continuous flat structure, providing a stable base for placing containers.

 

Transverse Beams and Longitudinal Beams: Transverse beams are structural members arranged horizontally beneath the deck and are used to support the deck plates and transfer the loads on them to the sides of the ship's hull. Longitudinal beams are distributed along the longitudinal direction of the ship, perpendicular to the transverse beams, further enhancing the integrity and load-bearing capacity of the deck structure. Transverse and longitudinal beams are generally made of profiles such as I-beams or channel steel, and the design of their sizes and spacing takes into account the distribution and weight of the containers.

 

Stiffeners: At certain key parts of the deck plates, such as beneath the container bases, stiffeners will be installed. The stiffeners can be T-shaped or L-shaped structures welded from steel plates, and their function is to enhance the strength of the deck in local areas and prevent local deformation of the deck when containers are stacked intensively or when the ship is rocking.

Hatch Coaming: There are large hatches on the deck of a container ship for loading and unloading containers. The hatch coaming surrounds the edges of the hatches, and its height is usually relatively high to prevent seawater from flooding into the hold during the voyage. The hatch coaming not only has to bear its own weight and the impact force of waves but also the collision force that may occur during the loading and unloading of containers. Therefore, the hatch coaming is generally made of thicker steel plates and is structurally reinforced.

 

Functional Characteristics

 

Load-bearing Function: The main function of the container ship's deck is to carry containers. During the loading process, the deck needs to bear the static loads of the containers and the dynamic loads generated due to the movement of the ship during the voyage. To ensure that the deck can safely carry the containers, the structural design and material selection must meet the strength requirements. For example, the deck of a large container ship capable of loading thousands of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of containers can bear several tons of pressure per square meter.
