Sulfur and phosphorus are considered harmful impurities. The sulfur content is usually limited to less than 0.04% and the phosphorus content to less than 0.04% in most standards. High levels of sulfur can cause hot - shortness, making the plates prone to cracking during hot working processes. Excessive phosphorus can lead to cold - shortness and reduced toughness.
