Strength and Mechanical Properties

 

Yield Strength: AH36 has a yield strength of at least 355 MPa. This high yield strength allows the hull to withstand the static and dynamic loads during the ship's operation, such as the weight of the ship itself, cargo, and the impact of waves.

Tensile Strength: With a tensile strength in the range of 490 - 630 MPa, it ensures that the steel can resist being pulled apart. This is crucial for the integrity of the hull when subjected to tensile forces, for example, during bending moments caused by waves or during maneuvers.

Toughness: The steel has good toughness, especially at low temperatures. This property is essential for ships operating in cold waters or in regions with extreme temperature variations. It enables the hull to absorb impact energy without fracturing, reducing the risk of hull damage from impacts such as collisions with floating objects or icebergs.

 

Chemical Composition and Weldability

 

Chemical Composition: The carbon content in AH36 is usually around 0.18% or less. Along with carbon, alloying elements such as manganese (around 0.9 - 1.6%), silicon, and others are added in specific proportions. This composition is designed to optimize the mechanical properties while maintaining good weldability.

Weldability: AH36 is highly weldable, which is a key requirement for shipbuilding. The steel can be welded using common welding techniques such as arc welding and gas - shielded welding. The welded joints have similar mechanical properties to the base metal, ensuring the overall structural integrity of the hull. This allows for the efficient assembly of the hull structure from various steel plates.

 

Applications in Hull Structure

 

Bottom Plating: The bottom of the ship's hull is subjected to high hydrostatic pressure, impact from waves, and abrasion. AH36 steel is used for the bottom plating to provide the necessary strength and durability. The thickness of the bottom plating can vary depending on the ship's size and intended service conditions. For example, in large cargo ships, the bottom plating may be several centimeters thick to withstand the heavy loads.

Side Shell Plating: The side shell of the hull needs to resist the lateral forces from waves and impacts. AH36 steel provides the required strength and toughness for this part of the structure. The side shell plating also contributes to the overall buoyancy and stability of the ship.

Deck Plating: The deck of the ship has to support the weight of cargo, equipment, and crew. AH36 steel is used for the deck plating to ensure that it can bear the imposed loads.
