ASTM A516 Grade 70

Chemical Composition: It contains elements such as C, Si, Mn, P, and S. The composition is carefully controlled to ensure good mechanical properties and resistance to embrittlement. The carbon content is relatively low, generally around 0.18 - 0.24%, which helps in maintaining good weldability and toughness.

Q345R

Standard and Specification: Q345R is also a Chinese - standard pressure - vessel steel. The minimum yield strength is 345 MPa. It is a higher - strength alternative to Q245R and is used in applications where greater strength is required to withstand higher pressures or loads.

Chemical Composition: Similar to Q245R, it contains C, Si, Mn, P, and S. However, the alloying elements' proportions may vary to achieve the higher strength. The carbon content is usually around 0.20 - 0.26%, and the manganese content is relatively higher than that of Q245R to contribute to the increased strength.

Mechanical Properties

Strength

ASTM A516 Grade 70: As mentioned, it has a minimum tensile strength of 70 ksi (about 485 MPa). The yield strength is also significant and provides the necessary resistance to deformation under load. This strength allows it to be used in pressure vessels that operate at moderate to high pressures.

Q245R: With a minimum yield strength of 245 MPa and a tensile strength in a certain range (usually around 400 - 520 MPa), it can bear the internal pressure of many common - pressure vessels. It is suitable for applications where the pressure and load requirements are not extremely high.

Q345R: The minimum yield strength of 345 MPa and a tensile strength range (typically around 510 - 640 MPa) give it an advantage in applications where higher strength is needed. It can withstand greater internal pressures and external loads, making it suitable for larger or more demanding pressure - vessel designs.

Toughness and Ductility

All three types of steel plates have good toughness and ductility. Toughness allows them to absorb energy during impact or sudden load changes without fracturing brittlely.
