Degree and Limitations of Hardness Increase

 

The degree of hardness increase caused by phosphorus segregation is related to the phosphorus content and the degree of segregation. Generally speaking, the higher the phosphorus content and the more severe the segregation, the greater the magnitude of the hardness increase may be. However, this increase in hardness is limited.

 

Because phosphorus segregation makes the material brittle while increasing hardness. When subjected to a relatively large external force, the material may directly have a brittle fracture instead of further resisting the external force through plastic deformation like a normal tough material. When the toughness and ductility of the material become worse, during a hardness test or in actual use, the material is more likely to have defects such as cracks.

 

The occurrence of these cracks will cause the hardness test results to be potentially deviated because the stress concentration around the cracks will change the actual stress conditions of the material. Moreover, in actual use, once cracks occur, the material's resistance to deformation will decrease due to the destruction of the structural integrity.
