The degree of hardness increase caused by phosphorus segregation is related to the phosphorus content and the degree of segregation. Generally speaking, the higher the phosphorus content and the more severe the segregation, the greater the magnitude of the hardness increase may be. However, this increase in hardness is limited.
Because phosphorus segregation makes the material brittle while increasing hardness. When subjected to a relatively large external force, the material may directly have a brittle fracture instead of further resisting the external force through plastic deformation like a normal tough material. Therefore, in practical applications, this increase in hardness brought about by phosphorus segregation may not be entirely beneficial, especially for welded structures that require a certain degree of toughness and hardness at the same time.
