Positive Impacts

 

In BV/D690 steel, the maximum content of silicon (Si) is 0.55%. Silicon has a deoxidizing effect during the steel - manufacturing process, which is a crucial point. During the solidification of the liquid steel, the presence of oxygen may lead to the formation of some oxide inclusions. These inclusions will disrupt the continuity of the steel and become stress - concentration points, reducing the toughness of the steel. Through the deoxidizing effect, silicon can reduce the formation of such harmful oxide inclusions, thus indirectly helping to maintain the toughness of the steel.

 

Silicon is beneficial for the formation of finer grains during the heat - treatment process. When the steel is heat - treated, silicon can impede the growth of grains. The refined grain structure has a significant enhancing effect on toughness. Because when the fine - grained steel is subjected to external forces, the grain boundaries can effectively impede the movement of dislocations, enabling the deformation to be more evenly distributed among multiple grains instead of being concentrated on a few grains, thereby improving the toughness of the steel. For example, under impact loading, the fine - grained BV/D690 steel can absorb more energy and is less likely to experience brittle fracture, showing better toughness.

 

Negative Impacts

 

Although silicon has a positive impact on toughness to a certain extent, if the silicon content is too high (exceeding the normal range), it may lead to an increase in the brittleness of the steel. This is because an excessive amount of silicon will change the phase composition and microstructure of the steel. When there is too much silicon, it may promote the formation of some brittle phases. These brittle phases are prone to cracking when the steel is subjected to external forces, reducing the toughness of the steel. However, within the specified silicon content range (up to 0.55%) for BV/D690 steel, this negative impact usually does not occur.
