Principle of Reduced Fracture Toughness

 

Impact of Microstructural Defects: When the silicon content is too high, grain coarsening and an increase in brittle phases, as described earlier, will occur in the steel. These microstructural defects will become the preferred locations for crack initiation and propagation. In a fracture toughness test, the stress concentration at the crack tip plays a crucial role in determining whether the material will fracture. The presence of coarse grains and brittle phases makes it difficult to relieve the stress concentration at the crack tip through the deformation of the surrounding microstructure. For example, under normal circumstances, when stress concentration occurs at the crack tip of a steel with a fine - grained structure, the surrounding grains can dissipate the stress through grain boundary sliding, dislocation movement, etc., thereby inhibiting crack propagation. However, for BV/A690 steel with an excessive silicon content, because its microstructure is not conducive to stress dispersion, cracks are more likely to propagate, resulting in reduced fracture toughness.

 

Decrease in Energy Absorption Capacity: Fracture toughness is related to the material's ability to absorb energy during the fracture process. Steel with an excessive silicon content has reduced ductility and cannot absorb energy through a large amount of plastic deformation during the fracture process as steel with a normal silicon content does. During crack propagation, steel with normal toughness can consume energy through dislocation multiplication, grain deformation, etc., making crack propagation require more energy and thus exhibiting higher fracture toughness. However, due to the presence of brittle phases and the limited plastic deformation ability of BV/A690 steel with an excessive silicon content, its energy absorption capacity is significantly reduced. Once a crack is generated, it is more likely to spread quickly, leading to a reduction in fracture toughness.

 

Relevance to Practical Applications

 

Performance under Dynamic Loading: In practical applications, if BV/A690 steel is used to manufacture components that bear dynamic loads (such as impact or vibration), an excessive silicon content will make it more prone to sudden fracture during the dynamic loading process. For example, in the field of mechanical manufacturing, when used to manufacture tools or components that bear impact loads, due to its reduced fracture toughness, cracks may spread rapidly when impacted, leading to component failure. Such a sudden fracture may cause equipment malfunction and even safety accidents.

 

Reliability in a Complex Stress Environment: In a complex stress environment, such as when tensile, bending, and torsional stresses exist simultaneously, the reliability of BV/A690 steel with an excessive silicon content will be reduced. Because under such complex stress, cracks are more likely to occur and propagate in areas of stress concentration (such as around brittle phases or at the boundaries of coarse grains). In contrast, steel with good fracture toughness can better cope with a complex stress environment and resist crack generation and propagation through its own microstructural adjustments (such as grain boundary strengthening, coordinated dislocation movement, etc.), while steel with an excessive silicon content has difficulty doing so, thus affecting its reliability in a complex stress environment.
