Raw material preparation stage
Iron ore selection and processing
Iron ore selection: According to the quality requirements of ship plates, a suitable source of iron ore is selected. For example, for high - strength ship plates, high - quality iron ores with high iron content (generally, the iron ore grade is required to be above 60%) and low impurity content (such as sulfur, phosphorus and other harmful impurities need to be strictly controlled) are usually preferred, such as the iron ores from Vale in Brazil and BHP Billiton in Australia.
Crushing and screening: The large pieces of iron ore mined are crushed to make their particle size meet the requirements of subsequent processing. Generally, jaw crushers, cone crushers and other equipment are used to crush the iron ore into smaller particles, and then screening equipment is used to screen out iron ore particles that meet the particle size requirements (usually between 10 - 30mm).

Coke and flux preparation: As the main fuel and reducing agent in the iron smelting process, the quality of coke directly affects the efficiency of iron smelting and the quality of molten iron. High - quality coke with high fixed carbon content (generally above 80% - 85%) and low ash content (usually less than 15%) is required. At the same time, fluxes such as limestone and dolomite need to be prepared. These fluxes can reduce the melting point of iron ore and improve the slagging conditions during the iron smelting process. The particle size of the flux is generally controlled at about 20 - 50mm.

Charging and smelting: The prepared iron ore, coke and flux are loaded into the top of the blast furnace according to a certain proportion (for example, usually about 0.4 - 0.6 tons of coke and 0.2 - 0.3 tons of flux are required for each ton of iron ore). Inside the blast furnace, the coke burns to produce high temperature (the temperature can reach 1500 - 1600 °C) and reducing gas (mainly carbon monoxide), which reduces the iron oxide in the iron ore into metallic iron. This process is a continuous smelting process, and the iron ore gradually melts in the blast furnace and forms molten iron.
Molten iron tapping and pretreatment: After a period of smelting, when a certain amount of molten iron accumulates at the bottom of the blast furnace, the molten iron is discharged through the taphole. The freshly tapped molten iron has a high temperature (about 1400 - 1500 °C) and contains a certain amount of impurities (such as sulfur, silicon, etc.), so it needs to be pretreated. Pretreatment methods include desulfurization, desiliconization, etc., to reduce the impurity content in the molten iron and improve the quality of the molten iron. For example, the injection method is used for desulfurization treatment, and desulfurizing agents (such as lime, magnesium powder, etc.) are injected into the molten iron to reduce the sulfur content to below 0.02%.

Crushing equipment
Jaw crusher
Working principle: It mainly crushes ores through the periodic movement of the movable jaw and the fixed jaw. The movable jaw plate makes a periodic reciprocating motion around the suspension shaft towards the fixed jaw plate, approaching and leaving it alternately. When the movable jaw plate approaches the fixed jaw plate, the ore is crushed by compression, splitting and bending between the two jaw plates; when the movable jaw plate leaves the fixed jaw plate, the crushed ore is discharged from the crushing chamber under the action of gravity.
Application characteristics: The jaw crusher has a simple and sturdy structure and can crush ores of various hardnesses. It is especially suitable for the preliminary crushing of large pieces of iron ore, and can crush large pieces of iron ore to a smaller size of about 100 - 300mm, preparing for the subsequent crushing process.
Cone crusher
Working principle: The working parts of the cone crusher are the inner cone and the outer cone. The outer cone is fixed, and the inner cone makes an eccentric rotary motion. The iron ore is crushed by compression and grinding between the two cones. During the crushing process, the iron ore enters the crusher from the top feed inlet. As the inner cone rotates, the ore is continuously compressed and ground in the crushing chamber until the particle size meets the requirements and is discharged from the bottom.
Application characteristics: The cone crusher is suitable for medium and fine crushing operations. It can further crush the iron ore that has been preliminarily crushed by the jaw crusher into particles with a more uniform and smaller particle size. Generally, the iron ore can be crushed to a particle size range of 10 - 30mm, which is suitable for the production process with high requirements for product particle size.
