I. Visual inspection
Observation of surface changes:
Carefully observe the surface of shipbuilding steel plates. If grain boundary corrosion occurs, some fine cracks or reticulated patterns may appear on the steel plate surface. These cracks are usually distributed along the grain boundaries and present a relatively regular pattern. For example, when observed under a magnifying glass or microscope, the crack width at the grain boundaries may be between a few microns and several tens of microns.
In addition, grain boundary corrosion may also cause the steel plate surface to lose its luster and become rough. Compared with the uncorroded area, the color of the corroded area may change, such as the appearance of rust spots, discoloration, or darkening.
Signs of local corrosion:
Grain boundary corrosion often appears more obvious in local areas. Check whether there are local depressions, pits, or peeling phenomena on the steel plate surface. These local corrosion areas are usually related to grain boundaries and are one of the typical characteristics of grain boundary corrosion. II. Metallographic analysis
Sample preparation and observation:

Through metallographic analysis, the microstructure of the steel plate can be clearly seen, including grain size, shape, and the distribution of grain boundaries.

The grain boundaries in the corroded area may become wider, darker in color, or there may be accumulation of corrosion products. Changes in grain morphology:

But after grain boundary corrosion occurs, the grains may appear deformed, broken, or detached. Element distribution analysis:
Use technologies such as electron probe and energy spectrum analysis to perform element distribution analysis on shipbuilding steel plates. If enrichment or depletion of certain elements is detected at the grain boundaries, it may be a sign of grain boundary corrosion. For example, in stainless steel, the depletion of chromium at the grain boundaries is an important reason for grain boundary corrosion.
