I. Principles for increasing corrosion resistance
Reducing the tendency of grain boundary corrosion:
Refining grains greatly increases the number of grain boundaries. Grain boundaries are often weak links in the corrosion process because the atomic arrangement at grain boundaries is irregular and has higher energy, making it easier for chemical reactions to occur. However, when grains are refined, the grain boundaries become finer and more evenly distributed. This makes the diffusion path of corrosive media at grain boundaries more complex and tortuous, thus slowing down the invasion speed of corrosive media. For example, in the marine environment, for corrosive media such as seawater to penetrate into the steel plate, it needs to pass through numerous fine grain boundaries, increasing the difficulty and reducing the possibility of grain boundary corrosion.
At the same time, the refined grain boundaries can better hinder the diffusion of corrosive ions and reduce local corrosion at grain boundaries. For example, corrosive ions such as chloride ions diffuse relatively quickly in coarse-grained structures and are easily concentrated at grain boundaries and cause corrosion. In shipbuilding steel plates with refined grains, due to the refinement and uniform distribution of grain boundaries, the diffusion of chloride ions is more greatly hindered, reducing the concentration of chloride ions at grain boundaries and thus reducing the degree of local corrosion.

Improving the stability of the passivation film:
Refining grains helps form a denser and more stable passivation film on the steel plate surface. In the marine environment, a layer of oxide film, i.e., the passivation film, will form on the surface of shipbuilding steel plates, which can prevent corrosive media from further contacting the steel plate and play a protective role. When grains are refined, the number of active sites on the steel plate surface increases, which is conducive to the uniform formation of the passivation film. The refined grain structure makes the passivation film bond more closely with the matrix and improves the stability of the passivation film. For example, in the case of wave impact and seawater immersion, the passivation film on the surface of shipbuilding steel plates with refined grains can better resist the destruction of external forces and the erosion of corrosive media, prolonging the protection time of the passivation film and thus improving the corrosion resistance of the steel plate.
