There are the following differences in performance among different grades of shipbuilding steel plates:

 

I. Strength Performance

 

General strength shipbuilding steel plates (such as grades A, B, D, and E):

The yield strength is relatively low, usually around 235 MPa. For example, the yield strength of grade A ship plates is generally not less than 235 MPa.

The tensile strength is also at a medium level, approximately between 400 - 520 MPa. For instance, the tensile strength of grade B ship plates is within this range.

These general strength ship plates are mainly suitable for small and medium-sized ships or parts with low strength requirements, such as the hulls of fishing boats and non-critical structural parts of cargo ships.

High-strength shipbuilding steel plates (such as AH32, AH36, DH32, DH36, EH32, EH36, FH32, FH36, etc.):

The yield strength is significantly higher than that of general strength ship plates. For example, the yield strength of AH36 ship plates is not less than 355 MPa.

The tensile strength is even higher and can reach 490 - 630 MPa. For example, the tensile strength of DH36 ship plates is within this interval.

High-strength ship plates can withstand greater loads and stresses and are suitable for large ocean-going ships and marine engineering structures where high material performance is required.

 

II. Toughness Performance

 

General strength shipbuilding steel plates:

They have a certain degree of toughness at room temperature, but the toughness may decrease in a low-temperature environment.

For example, in an environment around 0°C, the impact absorption energy of general strength ship plates is relatively low and may be around 20 - 30J.

High-strength shipbuilding steel plates:

They have good toughness, especially maintaining good performance in a low-temperature environment.

Taking EH36 ship plates as an example, at a low temperature of -40°C, its impact absorption energy can reach more than 27J.

High-strength ship plates usually undergo special heat treatment or alloying processes to improve their toughness and impact resistance.
