The mechanical properties of General Strength RINA Marine Steel Plate Grades A, B, D, and E vary with temperature in the following ways:

Grade A

Yield Strength: Generally, the yield strength of Grade A remains relatively stable within normal operating temperature ranges for ships. However, as the temperature drops significantly below normal ambient conditions (around room temperature), the steel may start to show an increase in yield strength due to the cold working effect to some extent. But it is not specifically designed for extremely low-temperature applications, and at very low temperatures close to its minimum operating limits, the risk of brittle failure can increase if subjected to sudden impacts.

Tensile Strength: The tensile strength also remains fairly constant in typical marine temperature environments. It has a defined range of 400 - 520 MPa under normal circumstances and doesn't change drastically with moderate temperature variations. But in extremely cold conditions, the ability to withstand tensile forces without breaking can be affected, and the steel becomes more prone to brittle fracture as the temperature decreases.

Elongation: Elongation percentage is around 22% or more depending on the thickness. At higher temperatures approaching the upper limits that the steel might experience in hot climate regions or near heat sources on the ship, the elongation might increase slightly as the steel becomes more ductile. In contrast, at lower temperatures, the elongation decreases, reducing the steel's ability to deform plastically before failure.

Grade B

Yield Strength: Similar to Grade A, the yield strength of Grade B maintains its typical value of around 235 MPa under normal temperature conditions. But when the temperature drops, especially below freezing (0°C), there can be changes in the internal structure of the steel that might cause a slight increase in yield strength and a corresponding reduction in ductility.

Tensile Strength: The tensile strength range of 400 - 520 MPa remains fairly consistent in most temperature ranges relevant to ship operations. However, in extremely cold conditions, the steel's ability to resist breaking under tensile loads can be compromised.

Elongation: With a normal elongation requirement similar to Grade A, at higher temperatures, it can exhibit better deformability. As the temperature decreases towards and below 0°C, the elongation reduces, making the steel more brittle and less able to withstand plastic deformation.

Grade D

Yield Strength: The yield strength of around 235 MPa is maintained under normal conditions. But as the temperature drops, especially as it approaches -20°C (the impact test temperature for this grade), the steel's microstructure can change in a way that might affect its yield behavior. It could potentially show a small increase in yield strength and a reduction in ductility compared to higher temperatures.

Tensile Strength: Tensile strength within the 400 - 520 MPa range remains relatively stable in normal temperature ranges but can be impacted in extremely cold conditions close to -20°C. The steel may become more prone to sudden failure under tensile forces in such low-temperature environments.

Elongation: The elongation percentage remains at the required level under normal temperatures. However, at -20°C and lower, the elongation decreases, limiting the steel's ability to deform plastically and increasing the likelihood of brittle fracture.

Grade E

Yield Strength: Like the other grades, the nominal yield strength of 235 MPa is maintained under normal conditions. But in very low-temperature environments approaching -40°C (its impact test temperature), the steel's internal structure can change to make it stiffer with a potential increase in yield strength and a reduction in ductility.

Tensile Strength: The tensile strength range remains similar to the others in normal circumstances but can be affected as the temperature approaches -40°C. The steel becomes more vulnerable to breaking under tensile forces in such extremely cold conditions.

Elongation: Under normal temperatures, the elongation meets the specified requirements. But at -40°C and lower, the elongation drops significantly, making the steel highly prone to brittle fracture and less capable of withstanding plastic deformation.

In summary, for all these grades of RINA marine steel plates, as the temperature drops, especially towards and below their respective impact test temperatures, the tendency is for the steel to become more brittle, with reduced elongation, potentially increased yield strength, and diminished impact toughness, which can affect the overall structural integrity and performance of the ship in cold environments.
